Front Yard Landscaping Ideas
Front yard landscaping ideas should hopefully draw attention to the front door. I decided the front yard of our home needed a better defined approach to the front door. Admittedly of all the landscaping I’ve done to our front yard…I’ve left this project to one of the last things on the list…mainly because I needed to hire someone else to do it. I did concrete flat work in the 70’s and haven’t done it since.
Our front yard landscaping ideas continue to evolve. The reason I chose to redo our front walk is because I wanted a wider approach to the front door.
I know that a lot of landscape designers like to use a more natural flowing path to the front door…but I wanted to bring a sense of order and architectural line to it.
I went wider too. I designed it 4’-6”wide. That’s wide enough so visitors don’t feel they need to walk single file to get to the door. When it was finished we added two square corner flower pots to give it a symmetrical feel and create a more defined approach to the front door. The photos show the progression of this project. Our house faces north so after trying a number of different plants over the years we found Coleus to do the best. It thrives in the shade and there are lots of color variations to choose from. My wife likes to use it in our flower pots along with grass plants. We added boxwood plants to soften the front edge of the porch. It creates a low border that doubles as a background for ground covers and stays green year round. We’re pleased with the finished look and how it functions. I have more ideas to expand on this layout, but I don’t want to get too carried away. I try to take my own advice by thinking what makes sense as a long term investment in the neighborhood.
